Pharma applications
The purified artemisinin molecule and its derivatives are currently used to combat malaria, but clinical trials in the latter phases show its high potential to combat other diseases, mainly several types of cancer such as colorectal, bowel, lung breast, hepatocellular cancer as well as solid tumours. The studies are mostly based on the artesunate form, in a range of 50-200mg to be taken daily orally or as suppositories.
Additionally, clinical trials also show the potential for other types of diseases (please see section Artemisia annua Therapeutic Potential), in total all these diseases affect 1.500 million people annually.
Therefore, the next 5-10 years could see a range of treatments based on artemisinin and its derivatives, where Artennua could prove to be a useful and plentiful source.
