Artemisinin, its derivatives, and other secondary metabolites contained in the plant Artemisia annua, have the potential to treat a broad range of diseases and afflictions. However, Artemisia annua produces very low quantities of artemisinin and thus its global supply is limited.
As scientists and social entrepreneurs, we have used natural plant biopharming methods to improve some characteristics of the Artemisia annua plant meaning its therapeutic properties can now be exploited more extensively.
